Directed learning modules make use of synchronous and pre-recorded webinars and other types of content for adult learners. Arranged in modules, the content points you to the subtleties of these topics. Whether you learn socially, through watching videos, reading text or completing tasks, each module has some learning experiences that should work to help you with the intricacies of graduate research and writing.
Averaging 80 webinars a year, DN & MN tracked 2453 graduate students who collectively watched 5K+ hours of webinars in fall/spring 2018-2019. Topics center on the 10 tags, serving up the subtleties of academic work along with tips for personal growth and wellness. Big hitters this year were: Argumentation, Writing Your Literature Review, Paraphrasing, Worry/Anxiety/Imposter Syndrome, Career Transference 101, CVs vs Resumes, and Critical Analysis.
Groups are single sessions aimed at those issues reported by students as causing confusion and frustration. They kick off with a 15-minute overview of a challenging circumstance, followed by 45 minutes of students critiquing their experience with an eye to move ahead. During spring 2019 the “hot” topics were: Writing tips, strategies and tools, and work-life balance.
Universities have proven that a badge and certificate program increases attendance at professional development. Stamps come by email and are done with an eye for encouragement. Endorsements can be given out by our university partners or by DoctoralNet and require reflective writing on the activity or readings involved and how they impacted the students work. We frequently work with programs ongoing on a university campus. Topic areas incorporate all of ten tagged topics: Academic Writing, Critical Thinking, Argumentation, Research Design, Thesis Design, Job Prep, Graduation Prep, Getting Published, Academic Hacks & Tools, Wellness.
Students may be curious or confused about important topics, like argumentation, but not be willing to invest an hour to check it out. Enter video snippets, a section of a larger webinar aimed at giving an overview and tempting a student to learn more.
Opt-ins are educational experiences delivered over a period of time by email. Several Deans have opted all their Masters students in for the Friday Academic Writing Emails being opened by 25%+ students each week. Monday motivations and the 10-day writing boost or 30-day writing challenge are also very popular.
With 400 video lessons on file many cluster and support a student trying to understand the subtleties of topics like literature review, academic writing, research design. These are put together in a boxed set, sent once by email but containing up to a dozen linked videos, with additional written resources and slides as well.
Some students hate to get emails so we built an app for their smartphones where they can go to sign up for the next webinars, find some motivation or access additional resources.
